Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators come with elegant double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their special features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end Ice makers.

We consulted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right home. They weighed storage capacity and layout and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series targets those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly and I was expecting better.

This fridge is a good option, despite the slight blip. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a good amount of frozen food when compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment has 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a fridge with a French door at this price. It has a decent-sized freezer in the left side. But it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to make an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS also looks attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice feature and the storage bins come with the third shelf, which can fold down so that you can store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls, so you can set them for Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to shut and open, but I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you would expect from a refrigerator within this price range. It has Wi-Fi as well as app support, and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and it has a ton of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is unlocked and when the freezer or fridge must be defrosted and when the filter needs to be changed.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill which is an option that is available in other GE fridges that allow you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to disperse at a time. The fridge displays a countdown timer to show you how much water is left however it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for various reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at just a few degrees Fahrenheit, never changing more than a fraction of a degree--this is key to preventing freezer burn. The fridge's refrigerator section also performed well, reaching the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our tests.

Bosch has a reputation for top-of-the-line appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is expensive, but it comes with excellent features and functionality for the price.

It is crucial to be aware of the limitations of the fridge. It has a small shelf space, so you'll need to be creative when storing tall items. Additionally, the shelves are not completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. It's easy to remove the trays in the fridge However, be sure to keep them clean to avoid mold growth.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth fridge is a great choice for those who require a lot of space in the space of a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge has the standard French-door layout, with gallon-sized door bins on each door, two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more room. There's also a full-width drawer to store products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the best things about this refrigerator is that the ice maker is in the freezer, which makes it easy to transfer ice into the fridge to use as needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, for instance, sliding drawers that help to organize the place of items. It also has a huge bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items and a separate container for storing ice.

Another cool feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. It allows you to control the temperature of your fridge as well as lighting using your smartphone. It's a simple way to keep track of your refrigerator and manage it, especially when not at home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than other models we tried. This is likely due to the greater capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. The sunken handles let shorter people open them from the bottom. However, taller people still have a hard time closing them without slamming. It would have been better if they had a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a fridge with a French door with an efficient layout. Its capacity is superior to counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a bit less than the best counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which helps make it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that isn't as striking in appearance as some of the competition, but it has enough features that make it a great option. Its most notable feature is the temperature adjustable drawer that helps keep food items like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which sits over the two crisper bins, is a great feature. This drawer lets you redirect some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can put away food items that require extra attention. You can adjust the feature using an adjustable slider that is located just on the outside of the drawer. You can also adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the fridge didn't differ significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance, but it isn't quite at the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise readings of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It does a great job of preventing streaks and fingerprints from appearing, even compared to glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
